On the day when the sad news broke that one of its patrons, Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, had passed away, the 2014 Caine Prize for African Writing was awarded to Okwiri Oduor for her short story, “My Father’s Head”, which originally appeared in Short Story Day Africa‘s collection, Feast, Famine and Potluck.

Before I took the opportunity to launch myself headfirst (in actual fact, complete right side first) down a flight of cement stairs, I'd had some astonishing work written by children (16/17ish years of age) at what we called "clinics" (after school gatherings).
If you're still involved, I'd love an opportunity again . . .

The 2014 competition for Short Story Day Africa concluded the 30th of June. Look out for next year's around April-ish 2015.
